There are two ways to have clients use an internal OS X Software Update Server. There are several reasons to do this, save bandwidth, control what gives approved, etc.

1.) The first way is to use a MCX policy setting and set it so the client computer is using the internal software update sever. This works well if every machine is being managed. What if they aren’t however?

2.) There is a command you can run to set this policy on any machine.

defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Softwareupdate CatalogURL http://servername:8088/index.sucatalog

Now if the machine is directly managed in your Open Directory environment or not, they can download your updates from the internal server.
