Windows 11 Dark Mode Is Finally Growing Up — But Still Feels Half-Baked

After nearly a decade of patchy dark mode, Microsoft is slowly rolling out more UI consistency in Windows 11. File operation dialogs are finally going dark — but many elements remain stubbornly stuck in the light.

Microsoft first introduced dark mode in Windows 10 back in 2016, but anyone who’s used it knows the experience has been anything but consistent. From menus that respected the theme to system dialogs that stubbornly stayed bright white, dark mode has felt more like a patchwork quilt than a polished feature.

Now, nearly a decade later, Windows 11 is making slow but noticeable progress. In the latest preview build, users spotted updated file operation dialogs that finally support dark mode. That means when you’re copying, moving, or deleting files, you won’t be blinded by a glaring white prompt in the middle of your dark-themed desktop.

That said, it’s still not perfect. The updated dialogs come with mismatched buttons — light-themed controls against the dark backdrop — making it clear this is a work in progress. And plenty of other areas, like the Control Panel, Run prompt, and file properties UI, remain stuck in light mode.

Microsoft hasn’t officially announced any sweeping dark mode improvements yet, but these incremental changes could be pointing to a broader UI refresh, possibly arriving in the 25H2 update later this year.

The contrast with Apple’s approach is striking. Since macOS Mojave in 2018, macOS has offered a consistent dark mode experience, and Apple is doubling down this year with its new Liquid Glass redesign, emphasizing translucency and polish.

For Windows users, the wait continues. After ten years, the dream of a fully cohesive dark mode still feels just out of reach — but at least those file copy dialogs won’t burn your retinas anymore.
